Progetto IMMIGRAZIONE in... inglese ed italiano!

This year our class had the great
opportunity to take part to a project organised by our teachers
Lidia Mulè and Maria Miosi. The aim of the initiative was to make us
aware about the phenomenon of immigration, which was possible thanks
to the various meetings that had been planned.
A significant part of this project was the time spent studying the
phenomenon: through an interesting brainstorming, some videos and
exercises we got an idea of what kind of problem we would face
during the following meetings.
In the first one, we had the possibility to interview some young
people from Africa to know something about their journeys at sea,
their arrivals and their lives today. They defined their journey
from their native country to Italy as very hard; some of them ran
away because of wars, economic problems or political issues. In
particular, we were touched by the stories of two students: Alpha
and Paterne.
Alpha is from Sierra Leone; he was forced to leave his country
because there was no freedom, and the human rights were not
guaranteed.Before leaving his country, he finished the middle school
and then he had the possibility to continue his studies in Palermo,
attending the Francesco Crispi high school, where he graduated last
June.
He decided to tell us about his sad experience at sea, which was
particularly moving. During his journey, he was on a rubber dinghy
which, according to him, “could easily be pierced by an earring’s
tip”. All of a sudden, he saw a terrible scene: a baby was drowning.
Alpha had one foot in the water and the other inside the dinghy, so
he couldn’t do anything to help the baby. When the child’s mother
asked him about her son, he could not answer and he is still shocked
by this terrible fact.
Alpha has been living in Italy for 3 years. Today he lives in
Palermo and he is studying to become a nurse in English at ISMETT.
At the moment he has not decided yet if he is going to remain or
move to another country.
Paterne, instead, is a 21 years old boy from Ivory Coast. He arrived
in Sicily in 2016 after travelling through Niger and Libya. For the
first 6 months Paterne lived in a welcoming centre in Marsala, where
he learned a little Italian. Then he moved to another structure near
Palermo, where he started to study for middle school diploma.
Paterne had already attended high school in his country, but was
discriminated by his teachers for his poor conditions. As he
referred, they told him: “poor children have no place in school”.
Paterne also explained us his idea about dreams: it is not destiny
that decides for us, instead we have to struggle to reach them.Today
Paterne is following his dream to become a healthcare assistant;
that is why he is studying for an entry test. Thanks to some local
associations such as Send, Moltivolti and Arché he is working as a
language mediator and he is the proof of a successful adaptation.
We deeply admire these students for their strength and we hope they
will succeed in making their dreams come true, as Paterne did.

On the 24th of November we had a second meeting, that took place at
Moltivolti, a multietnic association founded by a group of people
from different countries in 2014. It Is in the old and popular area
of Ballarò Market in Palermo, well-known for the different foreign
communities living there.
Moltivolti is a multicultural place: it is a restaurant where people
can try dishes from other countries; it is also a co-working place
that gives the opportunity to use its space for individual
activities. This reality is a no profit association which supports
social activities and offers work opportunities to refugees or
asylum seekers; for 5 years they have also been organising tours for
tourists in some African countries to promote the culture of these
areas of the world.
Here we had the opportunity to try new dishes: some of us ate a
Senagalese mafé, others consumed a cous cous with vegetables; we
also got to learn more about the association Mediterranea Saving
Humans, which represents an important help for migrants in danger.
It is an association of civil society, founded after the NGOs had
been forced to leave the Mediterranean sea; they save refugees
coming from different foreign countries in a completely legal way
and they witness, record and denounce what’s really happening there.
To join the project of Mediterranea it is not necessary to work on
their “Mar Jonio” ship as this organisation operates also on land to
spread awareness among the citizens and to raise funds to support
their activities.
A serious problem the association has to face is that of fake news,
which give a distorted and wrong vision of reality. For example,
some people believe that they work to gain money or that they don’t
respect European laws on this matter, putting their reputation at
risk.
It was a new experience for us, because we had the chance to
understand the commitment of common people who are interested in
helping people in need as volunteers and work in this association.
Our last meeting was a video-call with the French school “Charles De
Gaulle” in London; we met a young man named Marcello, who told us
about this project he participated to, organised by the “Comitato
del 3 Ottobre”. It is an association which aim is to sensibilize
citizens, students and institutions about themes such as migrants
welcoming and social integration. This “comitato” was named as “del
3 Ottobre”, because on the 3rd of October 2013 a lot of migrants,
precisely 368, lost their lives at sea because of a terrible
shipwreck near Lampedusa’s seashore. It was a distressing event,
because Lampedusa is represented as “the door of Europe”, but they
couldn’t reach it. Marcello invited us to participate to this
organisation’s initiatives, because for him it was a very educative
experience.
This project gave us an amazing opportunity: we could study and face
a phenomenon that is so close to us but that we easily ignore. It
was touching to know what people who lived in this kind of situation
felt and how their past influences their present; in addiction,
having the possibility to learn more about all the different
associations and ways to help was stimulating and will definitely be
useful in the future.

Quest’anno la nostra classe ha avuto la
preziosa opportunità di prendere parte ad un progetto organizzato
dalle nostre docenti di lingue straniere, Prof.ssa Lidia Mulè
(Inglese) e Maria Miosi (francese).
Scopo dell’iniziativa era avvicinarci al fenomeno dell’immigrazione:
ciò è stato possibile grazie ai vari incontri che erano stati
programmati.
Un’importante parte di questo progetto è stato il tempo trascorso a
studiare il fenomeno: attraverso un interessante brainstorming,
alcuni video ed esercizi, siamo riusciti a farci un’idea del tipo di
problema avremmo dovuto affrontare durante i successivi incontri.
Nel primo di questi, abbiamo avuto la possibilità di intervistare
alcuni ragazzi provenienti dall’Africa, così da conoscere meglio le
loro storie a partire dal travagliato viaggio per arrivare in Italia
fino alla vita che hanno trovato qui.
Hanno definito, il viaggio dal loro paese natale all'Italia, come
molto difficile; alcuni di loro sono scappati a causa di guerre,
altri per problemi politici o economici. In particolare, siamo stati
toccati dai racconti di due studenti: Alpha e Paterne.
Alpha è originario della Sierra Leone ed è stato costretto a
lasciare il suo paese poiché i diritti umani lì non erano garantiti
e, conseguentemente, non c’era libertà. Prima di partire aveva
finito la scuola media, mentre a Palermo ha avuto la possibilità di
proseguire gli studi frequentando il Liceo Francesco Crispi, dove si
è diplomato lo scorso giugno.
Ha deciso di raccontarci la sua tragica esperienza in mare, che è
stata particolarmente commovente da ascoltare. Ha iniziato definendo
il gommone sul quale viaggiava talmente fragile che la punta di un
orecchino avrebbe potuto bucarlo. Improvvisamente vide una scena
terribile: un bambino stava annegando. Alpha aveva un piede in acqua
e l'altro all'interno del gommone, quindi non lo avrebbe potuto
aiutare in alcun modo.
Quando la madre del bambino gli chiese di suo figlio, non ebbe la
forza di rispondere. Sfortunatamente, questo evento è ancora fin
troppo chiaro tra I suoi ricordi.
Alpha vive in Italia da 3 anni. Oggi vive a Palermo e sta studiando
per diventare infermiere in inglese presso l’ISMETT. Al momento, lui
non ha ancora deciso se rimarrà qui o se si trasferirà in un altro
paese.
Paterne, invece, è un ragazzo di 21 anni della Costa d'Avorio. È
arrivato in Sicilia nel 2016 dopo aver viaggiato attraverso il Niger
e la Libia.
Per i primi sei mesi ha vissuto in un centro d’accoglienza a
Marsala, dove ha imparato un po' di italiano. Poi si è trasferito in
un'altra struttura vicino Palermo, dove ha iniziato a studiare per
il diploma di scuola media.
Paterne aveva già frequentato il liceo nel suo paese, ma veniva
discriminato dai suoi insegnanti per le critiche condizioni
economiche della sua famiglia. Come ha detto, essi gli dissero: "I
bambini poveri non hanno posto a scuola".
Paterne ci ha anche spiegato la sua idea riguardo l’avere un sogno:
non è il destino che decide per noi, ma dobbiamo lottare per
raggiungere I nostri obiettivi.
Oggi Paterne sta seguendo il suo sogno di diventare assistente
sanitario: ecco perché sta studiando per un test d'ingresso. Grazie
ad alcuni persone del luogo e ad associazioni come Send, Moltivolti
e Arché sta anche lavorando come mediatore linguistico.
Ammiriamo profondamente questi studenti per la loro forza e speriamo
che riescano a realizzare i propri sogni, come ha fatto Paterne.

Il 24 novembre abbiamo avuto un secondo incontro, che si è svolto a
Moltivolti.
Moltivolti è un'associazione multietnica fondata da un gruppo di
persone provenienti da diversi paesi nel 2014. Si trova nella
vecchia e popolare zona del Mercato di Ballarò a Palermo, noto per
le diverse comunità straniere che ci vivono.
Moltivolti è un luogo multiculturale: è un ristorante dove provare
piatti tipici di altri paesi; è anche un luogo di co-working che
offre l’opportunità di utilizzare il suo spazio per attività
individuali. Questa è un'associazione senza scopo di lucro che
sostiene attività sociali e offre opportunità di lavoro ai rifugiati
o ai richiedenti asilo; per 5 anni sono stati anche organizzati tour
per turisti in alcuni paesi africani per promuovere la cultura di
queste aree del mondo.
Qui abbiamo avuto l'opportunità di provare nuovi piatti: alcuni di
noi hanno mangiato un mafé Senegalese, altri invece hanno consumato
un cous cous di verdure.
Abbiamo inoltre avuto modo di saperne di più sull’associazione
Mediterranea Saving Humans, che rappresenta un grandissimo aiuto per
I migranti in pericolo.
Mediterranea è un'associazione della società civile, fondata dopo
che le ONG sono state costrette a lasciare il Mediterraneo. Vengono
salvati tantissimi rifugiati provenienti da diversi paesi esteri in
modo completamente legale: attraverso ciò i volontari di
Mediterranea testimoniano, registrano e denunciano ciò che realmente
accade.
Per aderire al progetto di Mediterranea non è obbligatorio lavorare
sulla loro Nave "Mar Jonio", in quanto questa organizzazione opera
anche a terra, sensibilizzando i cittadini e raccogliendo fondi per
sostenere le loro attività.
Un problema serio che l'associazione deve affrontare è quello delle
fake news, che danno una visione distorta e sbagliata della realtà.
Ad esempio, alcune persone credono che i volontari lavorino solo per
guadagnare del denaro in più o che non rispettano le leggi europee
in materia, mettendo a rischio la loro reputazione.
È stata un'esperienza nuova per noi, perché abbiamo avuto la
possibilità di ammirare la dedizione di gente comune che è
interessata ad aiutare le persone che ne hanno bisogno, diventando
volontari e lavorando per questa associazione.
Durante il nostro ultimo incontro siamo riusciti a metterci in
comunicazione per via telematica con la scuola francese "Charles De
Gaulle" di Londra; abbiamo incontrato un giovane di nome Marcello,
che ci ha parlato di un progetto a cui ha anche partecipato,
organizzato dal "Comitato del 3" Ottobre".
Essa è un'associazione che ha lo scopo di sensibilizzare i
cittadini, gli studenti e le istituzioni su temi come l'accoglienza
e l’integrazione dei migranti nella società.
Visto che per lui è stata un’esperienza molto educativa, Marcello ci
ha invitato a partecipare alle iniziative di questa organizzazione.
Questo progetto ci ha dato un'opportunità straordinaria: abbiamo
potuto studiare e affrontare un fenomeno che è così vicino a noi ma
che facilmente ignoriamo. É stato estremamente toccante sapere cosa
hanno provato le persone che hanno vissuto questo tipo di situazione
e come il loro passato influenzi il loro presente; inoltre, avere la
possibilità di conoscere tutte le diverse associazioni e i diversi
modi attraverso i quali potere dare il nostro aiuto, è stato molto
stimolante e ci sarà sicuramente utile in futuro.
