orologioPlot
: Caravaggio, the famous and brilliant Italian Renaissance painter, is constantly on the run from his enemies. Pope Paul V hires a mysterious inquisitor, known as “The shadow”: his aim will be to dig into the artist life and talk to those who know him, to understand whether the man is a madman or a genius.
Rewiew:
Michele Placido's Caravaggio lives by feeding on reality. Certainly, I was amazed by the intensity, with which every scene of the film has been filled. The chiaroscuro, with which he has constantly played, in the relations of opposition, between art-truth or power-poverty. Just as Caravaggio's vices wanted. Light and shadow. Intense and constant passion. Intense emotions, from fear to courage. From love to hate. I would describe it as a seesaw in which one gets stuck, and almost persuaded. If the director's goal was to create a period reconstruction that didn’t aim at rhetorical spectacularization but at the material and effective substance of the environments, then it has been achieved.
A film in which Caravaggio's painting techniques, such as chiaroscuro, light and contrasting shadows, are not found only in his paintings and in his brushes. This time they come to life. We will find them in reality.
I would recommend to watch this movie, especially if you are fascinated by art. If you are not, this movie is so intriguing that you will certainly discover a wonderful world and you will love it.
